Electronics Uses will Help Expand the Sapphire Glass Market
The global sapphire glass market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 6% from 2015-2019, according to a recent report published by Technavio. Apple currently uses sapphire glass for the manufacturing of touch sensors and rear camera glass in all its iPhone, iPad, and iPod products, and is considered the single largest consumer of sapphire glass. The report also emphasized the increased use of sapphire glass in the manufacturing of Apple devices and Vertu luxury mobile phones.
“The latest Apple watch has a sapphire glass front, and the successful response of the watch will establish the use of the material,” said Faisal Ghaus, vice president. “Additionally, SCHOTT launched a sapphire glass range for various applications and is evaluating sapphire for smartphone displays. Corning is also evaluating sapphire for incorporating certain properties in its Corning® Gorilla® Glass range.”
Key vendors of sapphire glass include GT Advanced Technologies, Precision Sapphire Technologies, Rayotek Scientific Inc., Rubicon Technology Inc., Saint-Gobain SA, and Swiss Jewel.
