Steel is without question the largest end-use market for refractories around the world. Understanding trends in crude steel production can help refractories manufacturers evaluate their current processes and plans for the future.
According to the World Steel Association (worldsteel), worldwide crude steel production figures topped 1,691 Mt for 2017, an increase of 5.3% compared to 2016. Crude steel production increased in all regions in 2017, except the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS; includes Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine), which has remained stable (subject to current estimates). Table 1 includes production details for the leading 10 crude steel-producing countries in 2017.
