CERAMTEC: Piezoceramic Ultrasonic Flow Sensors
CeramTec’s piezoceramic expertise and transducer design knowledge has led to the development of an improved 2-MHz water-coupled transducer.
A new 2-MHz ultrasonic flow sensor developed by CeramTec reportedly delivers stable, consistent water flow measurements by reducing zero-flow offset to improve the accuracy of ultrasonic meters for utilities measurement from 0-130°C. The accurate measurement of water flow in domestic metering or industrial applications can be affected by variations in ultrasonic sensing parameters over temperature. The challenge in the development of ultrasonic flow sensors for accurate ultrasonic meters is stabilizing zero-flow offset over the temperature range; without a stable zero-flow measurement, meters will present inaccurate readings. This nonreciprocity between the ultrasonic flow sensors can vary non-linearly over the operating temperature range, reducing the efficacy of the algorithmic calibration profile, as well as the sensors’ dynamic range and measurement accuracy.
CeramTec’s piezoceramic expertise and transducer design knowledge has led to the development of an improved 2-MHz water-coupled transducer. The variation in zero-flow offset over temperature has been reduced to values as low as 30 ps, which improves measurement accuracy and increases dynamic range. These sensors have reportedly been used to take accurate measurements below 5 l/hr over a full temperature range for domestic applications. The ultrasonic sensors also offer sensitivity as high as -8 dB over a 150-mm water-filled path, as well as a bandwidth of 400 kHz at -3 dB.
