Pigments Continue to Dominate Uses for Titanium Dioxide
The Asia-Pacific region accounted for 46% of global demand for TiO2 pigments in 2017.
In 2017, 15 Mt of ilmenite, rutile, and titanium slag were processed worldwide, according to a titanium dioxide (TiO2) market study by Ceresana. Of that total, 60% was utilized for the production of pigments and 7% for other end products (e.g., technically pure titanium, electrical conductors, and chemical intermediates). The remaining 33% was used for further refinement into synthetic rutile and titanium slag.
While only a few countries dominate the market for these feedstocks, processors in Asia-Pacific, North America, and Western Europe determine the demand. The Asia-Pacific region accounted for 46% of global demand for TiO2 pigments in 2017. North America and Western Europe followed with almost 17%, respectively.
