Online shoe and clothing retailer Zappos recently announced it would be doing away with management titles and the usual top-down hierarchy. Instead, the company will roll out a new kind of organizational approach that focuses on redistributing power more evenly and promoting self-governance among employees. Last week's CI CyberNews CyberPoll asked readers whether they believe such an approach could be successful. The majority of respondents (62.5%) said no, while 25% were unsure. Only 12.5% of respondents believed the approach would succeed.
Comments included:
"This will only work with the right work force. Without a highly motivated workforce people will lose direction in this type of structure."
"I see a train wreck with this approach!"
"It really depends upon how they do it."
"We have a pretty flat organization, but I find it hard to believe that an organization can coordinate its activities without someone or a team responsible for strategic guidance."
