A recent NPR story covered a San Francisco company that installed heat and motion sensors in their office building earlier this year. The sensors, which tracked which rooms and resources were used most by employees, found that desks were only used 20% of the workday, while conference rooms were used about 40% of the day. Last week's CI CyberNews CyberPoll asked readers: how much of your time each day is spent at a desk? A breakdown of response categories follows:
- 50-75% of the day: 50%
- Nearly the entire day: 30%
- 25-50% of the day: 10%
- Other / Not sure: 10%
One reader commented, "While half or more of my day can be at my desk, most of the rest is in the lab or on the shop floor. Thankfully, I have to spend very little time in the conference room." Another said, "It varies with different projects."
