Low emissivity glass, or low-e glass, is an energy-saving glass with high-quality heat-resistance performance, lower rate of thermal emission, and effective light and thermal control capacities. It is often used in electronics, building, automotive and other fields. Low-e glass production in China, encouraged by positive factors such as energy conservation, technological improvement, and emission reduction, increased from 6 million sq m in 2005 to 134 million sq m in 2013, at a 47% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), and is estimated to rise to 152 million sq m in 2014. The penetration rate of the low-e glass market in China is around 11%, although it can realize large-scale production in the region. China’s low-e glass market still lags behind Germany, the U.S., South Korea, and other developed nations (mostly over 80%), which leaves large room for growth in the Chinese market. It is estimated that the demand for low-e glass in China will grow at a CAGR of around 23.5% during 2014-2017.

Mainland China’s low-e glass market was highly concerted prior to 2009, as six large companies held a collective 70% of total low-e glass market share. With the growing number of companies engaged, however, the low-e glass market’s concentration started to decline. The top six companies were left with just 47.4% of total low-e glass market share in 2014. At present, major Chinese low-e glass market players are continuing with their competence development to improve competitiveness.

In September 2013, Taiwan Glass Group invested $240 million to build a low-e glass factory in Shenyang. The project is to be accomplished in two phases, of which the first phase focuses on a low-e laminated glass manufacturing and the second phase focuses on low-e vacuum glass manufacturing. This project is likely to be finished and put into production by the end of 2015.
