Automotive exhaust purification systems were developed in the early 1970s in response to smog in the Los Angeles basin, legislation in California, and the 1970 U.S. Clean Air Act Amendments, where the latter set specific goals for reduction of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions by the mid-1970s.
