Dyson Ceramics Systems: Dylite Cordierite Material

Dyson Ceramic Systems has introduced Dylite, a new cordierite material that is almost half the weight of standard cordierite. The new material gives kiln furniture users the potential to obtain refractory weight savings of up to 50%, achieve faster firing cycles and reduce energy consumption substantially. Developed by Dyson over a period of three years, Dylite offers many additional benefits to refractory users. Thermal shock resistance is improved over standard cordierite, giving longer refractory life, and the new material's lower specific heat capacity enables quicker heating and cooling. Rapid firing is therefore a real possibility with Dylite, giving the opportunity to increase kiln speed and throughput. Refractory coating is also improved. The new material's high porosity enables cover wash to be more easily absorbed and adhere to the refractory, giving an improved protective coating.
